I have been making this recipe for a long time and have always got compliments on how tasty it is. It is a sure crowd pleaser and perfect for a birthday cake! And it takes no time at all to make it (literally less than 15 minutes). It also makes an easy dessert for dinner or an after school snack for the kids.
How do you make vegan chocolate cake from scratch?
I love this recipe because it is vegan friendly but it’s just a normal cake recipe! Sure, it has vinegar and whole wheat flour which may seem weird, but I promise you it tastes delicious. So how do you make this you ask?
Well first you need the following ingredients:
- whole wheat flour
- cocoa
- salt
- sugar
- baking soda
- vegan butter or coconut oil
- vinegar
- vanilla
- cold water
Then the process is crazy simple:
- Place first five ingredients in an ungreased 9″ by 13″ baking pan. Mix together.
- Make 3 holes in the batter. In the first one pour your oil or butter. The next one, add the vinegar. And the last one, pour the vanilla.
- Quickly pour the cold water over it all and stir well.
- Bake at 360F for 30 minutes.
And just like that you have a delicious vegan chocolate cake made all from scratch! You can choose to add icing of your choice or honestly, it tastes great without icing too.
P.s. You can also make this cake not vegan by simply using regular butter and chocolate chips! Yup, it’s that easy!
Can I use white flour instead of whole wheat in my chocolate cake?
Yes, you can use white flour instead, but I highly recommend using whole wheat. It adds a texture that I really like! If you are going to use white flour, add 2 tablespoons extra.
Why do you add vinegar to chocolate cake?
The vinegar is an acid and so it reacts with the baking soda causing the cake to be fluffy and moist!
How do you make the colorful icing for your Vegan Chocolate Cake Recipe?
To get colored icing like I did, is actually very simple. You make your icing and spread it on your cake. Next you take food coloring and squeeze a few drops of different colors all over the top. Taking a spatula, spread it lightly, so the colors mix together. Then voila! You have pretty colorful icing for your chocolate cake.
Can I use baking soda in a cake instead of baking powder?
Yes you absolutely can! And because this recipe uses vinegar as well, baking soda is the perfect ingredient.
