Delicious Bacon and Potato Chowder
This recipe is so simple yet so tasty I absolutely love it! It is also very cheap too, depending on the price of potatoes and bacon you choose, when I made it, it was less than 2 dollars per serving!!
Chowder is so creamy and comforting. It is a great “warm-me-up” on a cold winter day! Pin it for later when you need a quick meal!
So what do you need to make Delicious Bacon and Potato Chowder?
- Potatoes (your choice!)
- Onions (white work best!)
- Bacon (your choice!)
- Water
- Salt
- Chicken bouillon cubes or powder
- Evaporated milk (or regular milk will do!)
- Flour (white)
Now how do you make Delicious Bacon and Potato Chowder?
First, you do all the prep work.
- Cook bacon to desired crispiness and save some of the grease.
- Peel and chop potatoes into bite sized pieces.
- Dice onions.
Then comes the cooking part!
- You simply brown the onions in a heavy base pot. Next add in the potatoes, water, salt and bouillon cubes. Cook till potatoes are soft.
- In a small bowl, add flour and 3 tablespoons of evaporated milk to make a smooth paste. Slowly add the rest of the milk, stirring until the flour is all mixed in.
- Pour into the pot and cook until thickened. Add in bacon and some of the grease (a few tablespoons for flavour!)
- Serve warm with cheddar cheese and parsley as garnish if desired.
Can I freeze Delicious Bacon and Potato Chowder?
Yes this recipe freezes well! That is if there is any leftover to freeze! You could also make a triple or double batch of this recipe to make sure there is some leftover. And if you do freeze this chowder just make sure when you are heating it up, to stir it really well.
What is the difference between potato soup and potato chowder?
A soup generally is thinner and uses broth, while a chowder is usually cream based (in this case the evaporated milk!) and is pretty thick!
What kind of potatoes do you use for chowder?
Potatoes are a main ingredient when it comes to making chowder. They are full of starches which get released as they cook, making potatoes natural thickeners. Russets are the best kind of potatoes for making a chowder.

Ingredients
- 10 slices bacon
- 1 onion diced
- 6 cups water
- 3-4 chicken bouillon cubes
- salt
- 6 large potatoes peeled and chopped into bite sized pieces
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1 14.5 oz can evaporated milk
Garnish, optional
- parsley
- cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Cook bacon and reserve some of the grease.
- Dice onions.
- Peel and chop potatoes into bite sized pieces.
- In a heavy based pot, cook onions with some of the bacon grease until soft.
- Add water, potatoes, salt and chicken bouillon cubes.
- Bring to a boil and simmer until potatoes are soft.
- In a small bowl add flour and 3 tablespoons of evaporated milk to make a smooth paste. Add rest of the milk, stirring until the flour is all mixed in.
- Pour into the pot and cook until thickened. Add in bacon and some more of the grease (a few tablespoons for flavour!)
